COSTUME OF CASTIADAS

Castiadas is a young community, only obtaining its independence in 1986. Before this it belonged to Muravera council. The inhabitants of Castiadas come from many areas, but a significant number come from the Sarrabus which is also the region where the council is found.
Castiadas decided to adopt the old costume of the Sarrabus as its traditional dress after in-depth research on old texts by senior members of the community, to establish the definitive version. It is made up of the following:

MEN’S COSTUME
- SA CAMISA, - a white cloth shirt, open at the front with an embroidered strip along the opening.

- SA SPRIGHITA – the shirt is gathered at the wrists, sleeves and neck and is closed with a black velvet ribbon holding two gold, silver and iron buttons which, in former times, indicated the social status of a person.

- I BRAGASA – very wide and puffy linen trousers, reaching below the knee.

- IS CRAZZAS - black cloth stockings which start at the knee and cover the shoe almost entirely.

- IS CRAZO’ISI DE ARRODA – short, wide, black cloth kilt

- SU CROPETTU - a waistcoat in black cloth and coarse fabric, decorated with one or two rows of semi-precious metal buttons.

- SA BERRITTA- headcovering in black cloth, worn folded over on one side.

THE FEMALE COSTUME
- Very wide, dark red pleated skirt (SA BARRA)

- Crimson or violet apron (S’ANTANENI)

- Brockade bodice, worn over the shirt and which formerly functioned as a bra (SU COSSU)
.
- Short jacket of the same material and colour as the apron (SU GIPPO’T)

- The head is covered by a red headscarf with a second white scarf , wedding veil or embroidered shawl on top, as the occasion demands (SU MUCADORI ARRUBIU) Formerly the red scarf was worn day and night.

The whole costume is enriched by “SA GRAMADA”, a decoration placed between the hair and the red scarf, made of a red velvet ribbon, 5 cm long and adorned with shiny black pearls, which were worn to cover the hair grip.
This band, always depicted in old texts and photographs of the Sarrabus costume, has not been adopted by other villages, thus becoming the special characteristic of our female community.
