| Whoever
spends a holiday here today must is strongly recommended to visit
the colony and its numerous detachments, currently under repair
and complete restoration. There is also an ambitious plan for
the use of these former prison buildings.
In an attempt to keep alive the tradition of handicrafts, such
as the manufacture of casks for wine, baskets, ropes, rugs, etc,
which was once very common, some parts of the restored penal colony
are used during the summer as small craft and farm produce shops,
where visitors can see the skilled local artisans at work.
S ince
1986 Castiadas has been an independent borough, representing one
the areas with greatest potential for tourism, yet it can already
offer a really relaxing holiday, with modern, state-of-the-art
facilities, to both sun-seekers and wildlife enthusiasts.
Its huge receptive capacity allows any accommodation request to
be fulfilled, from even the most demanding tourist, with high-class
hotels, campsites, country guest houses and holiday homes.
Besides local products, you can enjoy typical Sardinian cooking,
with roast suckling pig, goat and lamb, side dishes of ham, salami,
olive or cheese-filled sausages and a wide selection of grilled
fish.
Various types of biscuits/cakes are produced such as “amaretti”
(almond biscuits), “formagelle” (sweet cheese tarts),
“Sebadas” (large cheese-filled ravioli served with
lemon or honey) and several kinds of honey and excellent local
wines, produced and distributed by the Cooperative Wine Growers’
Association of Castiadas and a few resident farmers.
From June to September, it is possible to enjoy and participate
in the folk events, concerts, food festivals and popular traditions.
The celebrations begin with the feasts of St John the Baptist,
patron of Castiadas, and the Assumption on 15th August, with an
evocative Mass and procession to the sea in honour of the saint.
Not to be missed is the craft and farm produce exhibition in July-August
which is held every year with arts and manufactured goods produced
by locals, offering the tourist a wide range of baskets, wood
carvings, gold products and carpets, as well as the possibility
of tasting a variety of local dishes from the food and wine display.
The exhibition takes place at the villa of the exprison governor
and is served with dancing, music and themed entertainment.
All that remains to say is: Happy holidays from CASTIADAS online!
