| EXCURSION
TO BACCU LOCCI
Leaving the ex penal
farm of Castiadas we head towards the sea, where the beauty of
the coast is enhanced by the Seven Brothers mountain chain, a
ridge of verdant high ground which dominates the area, ideal for
trekking and walks.
Carrying on towards the sea, we cross the originally volcanic
promontory of Capo Ferrato, with its silent and secret bays and
a view that extends for miles along the beach and the large Feraxi
pond.
Along this journey we visit the numerous wet areas spread out
along the coast. Here the great pool of Colostrai stands out,
in which pink flamingos, grey herons and stilt birds nest.
Where the river Flumendosa flows into the sea,
we find Muravera. One of the peculiar things about the area is
the mild climate which favours the growing of citrus fruits. Moving
on from here, we find two more villages – San Vito and Villaputzu
which, in past centuries, based their economies on the silver
mines Monte Narba and Baccu Locci.
Past Villaputzu near Quirra we head towards the heart of
the Sarrabus (Quirra drop), characterised by canyons and vertical
walls hewn from the rocks. Here we discover the lead, zinc and
arsenic mine of Baccu Locci and the villages constructed by the
miners.
